Driving in Australia

Please drive safely and carefully on our local roads and obey all of the Australian road rules and regulations.

Do I need a driver’s licence

If you want to drive in Australia you must hold a valid international driving permit AND a driver’s licence issued in your home country.

What side of the road do Australians drive on?

Australians drive on the LEFT side of the road. If this is different to your home country, ask passengers to remind you of this every time you set off and when you are turning at an intersection.

Give way to the right

Roundabouts in Australia operate in a clockwise direction – give way to the right. Give way to the right at intersections too.

Do I need to wear a seatbelt?

Yes. In Australia it is illegal for the driver and passengers in a vehicle not to wear a seatbelt while driving. Wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of fatal or serious injury by 50%. If you are caught not wearing a seatbelt you face a $413 police fine & will lose 3 licence points.

Can I use my phone while driving?

No. It is illegal for you to hold a mobile phone in your hand while driving, or to have it resting on any part of your body. Queensland Transport has video cameras located throughout the state to capture drivers using their phone. If caught the fine is up to $1033 and loss of 4 licence points.

Can I drive faster than the speed limit?

No, please observe the speed limit at all times. Speed limits are clearly marked on roads and are strictly enforced in Australia. Speeding is a major killer on Australian roads. In Queensland an average of 56 people are killed due to speeding every year.

If you are caught speeding you face a large fine and loss of licence points.

Please be especially careful around local schools and in residential areas.

Dangers of Speeding Fact Sheet

Where can I park my car?

Park on the left hand side of the road in the direction of traffic. Ensure your car does not block traffic flow, or the entry and exit to a property or driveway. Do not park close to an intersection, or in front of a post box. Do not park facing oncoming traffic as you may incur a fine. Do not park across footpaths or up on kerbs.

What are the rules for drinking alcohol and driving?

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is dangerous and serious penalties apply if you are caught.

You are not allowed to drive your car with a blood alcohol level of 0.05 or higher. If you hold a provisional licence you must have a zero blood alcohol level.

Up to 50 deaths a year in Queensland are a result of drink driving.

What should I know about driving in rural & remote parts of Australia?

Driving in rural areas like the Scenic Rim requires special driving skills and awareness of road conditions.

Be aware that road conditions are not always excellent and drive to suit the conditions. Our roads are often narrow, please stay on your side of the road.

Be aware of kangaroos and other wildlife on the roads, particularly at dusk and night. If you are driving on a gravel or dirt road please slow down and drive to suit the conditions.

If it has been raining the roads may be slippery, please slow down.

Driving on the Cunningham Highway – what do I need to know?

The Cunningham Highway, which runs at the front of Kalfresh, is a busy transport corridor. Many trucks and heavy vehicles travel on this road travelling at high speeds.

Please be aware that these vehicles cannot stop quickly.  Do not pull onto the road infront of a truck as they may not be able to stop  easily and you may cause a serious accident.

Do not overtake a truck on the Highway unless it is safe to do so and is allowed.

If you are going to turn off the highway into a driveway or side road ensure you indicate with plenty of time, to allow the vehicles behind you time to slow down.

When can I overtake another vehicle?

Where the centre line marking on the road is a single broken line, vehicles may cross the line to overtake when it is safe to do so. If the centre marking has one or two solid lines you must not overtake if the line closest to you is unbroken.

Is there wildlife on the roads?

Yes there can be, particularly in the early morning, late afternoon and at night. In particular look out of kangaroos, possums, rabbits and birds on the roads. Often they may run across the road in front of cars. Drive at a safe speed so if an animal does cross in front of you, you can further reduce your speed. Do not attempt to swerve your car violently as this may lead to a serious accident.
